The poi is used as part of the Maori kapa haka performance. This "ball" on a string is swung around with rhythm and precision as part of the intricate dance moves. Traditional M?ori used the poi dance to keep their hands flexible for their activities like weaving or warfare. Nowadays poi dance is a beautiful art form. It is taught in schools and kapa haka groups across New Zealand. The long string handle is woven together with the iconic colours of red, black and white. The ball has been firmly sewn to keep together during the vigorous treatment during the kapa haka performance
